July 11th is "Pearl Memorial Day."
In fact, it is said that on this day in 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto, the founder of Mikimoto, succeeded in cultivating pearls for the first time in Japan.
The pearls produced at that time were hemispherical Akoya pearls, and it was some time later that perfectly round Akoya pearls became available.
In recent years, the mass mortality of Akoya oysters, the mother-of-pearl of pearls, has continued for three consecutive years, leading to a decrease in Akoya pearl cultivation and causing great hardship for producers.
There are various factors contributing to the mass mortality, and one of them is the rising seawater temperature in fishing grounds.
The rise in seawater temperature is mainly caused by the temperature increase due to global warming, and the cultured pearls we handle are materials strongly affected by the environment.
Japanese cultured pearls are an industry we can be proud of, and I believe they are a beautiful and wonderful material that should be preserved for future generations.
As for our future initiatives, we believe that by reducing our impact on climate change and creating jewelry that combines "sustainable materials" (which do not destroy nature or overuse resources) with "pearls born in rich oceans," we can provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the global environment and the problems occurring on Earth.
The various pearls handled by sCenes, including Akoya pearls, are only possible thanks to the efforts and hardships of many predecessors involved in aquaculture. Therefore, we intend to gradually repay this debt in some tangible way.
